Frequently Asked Questions
A: The schedule for Art Seminars is currently unavailable . We will update the schedules as events are finalized and artists firm up their plans during the year, and a final schedule will be posted when it is ready.
A: The prices that you put on each piece of art MUST BE THE PRICE FOR THAT PIECE. If you do not wish to sell your originals, or if you want to sell your originals for what you think they’re worth, then you put the appropriate price/NFS tag on the piece in question. However, if you wish to put up a small sign next to the originals stating that you have less expensive prints for sale in the Artist’s Alley, you may certainly do so.
A: Any art that is not claimed by the time the art show is cleared out will be taken for safe keeping by the Art Show Coordinator. HOWEVER, neither the coordinator nor Nan Desu Kan assume liability or responsibility for any art that is left unclaimed by the artist.
Anyone who needs to pick up unclaimed art after the show will need to make arrangements the week following the show. You can contact the Art and Model Show head by email, or by snail mail:

A: As of right now, I’m afraid not. Mail-in entries may be accepted for future shows, and as soon as that starts happening you will see information regarding this on these art show pages.
A: Judging for the art show takes place Saturday after closing. Judges are selected prior to the show, and all decisions of the judges are final.
A: Nobody under any circumstances is allowed to simply walk in and photograph art in the art show. All artwork is the sole copyright of each individual artist, and allowing general photography would infringe on certain copyright laws. We will grant exceptions to those who are both in the presence of the art staff as well as the artist with whom has given consent (or if with written consent, signed by the artist) to photograph that artist’s art.
Anyone who is caught photographing art in the art show room, without the express written or vocal consent of those whose art is photographed as well as without the knowledge and permission of the art show staff, will be escorted out of the art room and possibly away from the convention.
A: I can’t really answer that because of two things: 1) we usually do not have prizes until right before the convention, and 2) not every art show category has a prize. Our sponsors have given us great prizes in the past, and the prize donations differ from year to year. We also kind of like to surprise people!
A: In a word, no. Any submissions depicting adult/mature situations or those of a suggestively mature nature are not allowed at this time. We do have quite a few young attendees at Nan Desu Kan, and we do not as yet have a private viewing place for adult/mature art.
A: Anyone wishing to participate in the Art Show must register for a convention membership or purchase a membership at the door in order to do so. This also applies to Agents acting on behalf of the Artists that they represent. Anyone who does not have at least a 1-day pass will not be permitted to enter art into the show.
A: Submissions will be accepted from science fiction and fantasy as well as anime genres. We have also had a wide range of art in many mediums at previous shows. One entrant at NDK5 entered her homemade dolls inspired by anime shows!
A: This would depend on one thing, and one thing only; are you the agent for the artist? If so, we will have areas on the entry forms for the agent’s information as well as for the artist’s information. As an acting agent, you will be acting on the artist’s behalf, and any agreement made between yourself and the artist you represent are to be made and finalized before the show. If you are indeed acting as an agent for the artist, then the answer is yes.
If you are not an agent for the artist, then the answer is no.
A: Yes, but they must be prints/reproductions of your own artwork, and you can only hang one of each different piece of art that the print/reproduction comes from. Our suggestion would be if you would like to sell multiples of each print/reproductions of your artwork, that you do so via a booth in the Artist’s Alley.
Prints/reproductions of the works of other artists are not acceptable as entries in the Nan Desu Kan art show unless you are acting as an agent for the artist of those prints. See next question for more details.
A: Currently the amount of art that any one person can bring to the show is limited to 1 flat, or 2 panels (1 flat equaling 2 panels). We have instituted this policy due to two reasons; a) we cannot afford to build more flats every year, and b) we want to get as many participants as we can, yet not limit those that are prolific, as we feel 2 4’X4’ panels is enough space for anyone who wishes to enter their art. Also, since we are on a first come, first served basis, we feel it is extremely important to stress to all potential entrants to bring in your works early!
A: As Nan Desu Kan does not charge an entry fee for the art show, the answer is no. The art show is on a first come, first served basis. I encourage anyone who wishes to enter art to bring in their entries early.
A: Nan Desu Kan currently does not charge an entry fee for the art show. However, if you wish to sell your art, Nan Desu Kan will take 10% of all art sales to cover the cost of handling sales for the artists.
A: For our weekend fees, please check our registration page.
A: While some parents elect to stay in the hotel and relax while their children attend the convention, others choose to drop their children off a the hotel. If you choose to drop your child off, have a designated time and place for pick up and drop off. If you choose to stay at the hotel, get a system in place for what to do if you are separated at any time. A lost child can ask any member of our 250+ staff, identifiable by staff shirts and staff badges for help. For the duration of the convention, there will be staff members in convention room, and roaming the hallways. Remember, it’s important for kids to know that it’s better to ask staff for help than to look on their own. Remind your child to drink lots of water, and remember to eat at mealtimes, as the excitement of the days events can sometimes overpower the desire to do these important things.
A: With over 250 staff members, no person attending is very far from someone who can offer help or answer questions. All videos displayed, AMVs shown, costumes displayed, and video games made available to play by the convention are pre-screened for content and are strictly limited to things rated PG-13, or comparable. NDK also has a curfew enforced at 10pm for attendees under the age of 18. Additional safety measures to protect our attendees include a multitude of water stations located throughout the hotel, an EMS staff, along with senior staff patrolling the duration of the weekend. NDK strives every year to make our convention a safe and family friendly place for everyone who attends.
A: NDK offers a totally unique experience, and it’s different every year. Not only does our dealers room feature many rare and unique collectables imported exclusively from Japan, we also bring in anime industry guests ranging from the voice actors of your favorite anime characters to the original character artists, straight from Japan. NDK also features an art and model show where attendees can see the amazing artistic and modeling talents of our very own Rocky Mountain locals, and many of these items are even made available for purchase. We also have a space called artist’s alley where fledgling artists can display and vend their works, and our industry guests can show and sell some of their original art. Many of the items seen at NDK will never be sold or seen anywhere else, something a normal media store can offer!
A: NDK has three 24 hour video rooms. These video rooms give fans a chance to sample various anime series that they may not have heard of before, and a chance to catch a glimpse of series that they may have been curious to see, but haven’t wanted to purchase without seeing what it’s like. NDK also hosts live shows like cosplay chess, which is a live-action chess game where our costumed attendees volunteer to play the pieces, trivia games where attendees test their knowledge of their favorite anime and video games, karaoke where attendees can sing their favorite anime and video game songs, and guest panels where attendees can hear the thoughts and antics of our various industry guests and ask them questions. In addition to this, we have many different panels for those interested in the cultural side of Japan. Although NDK strives to present all of our panels free of charge, there is an occasional panel that requires a supplies fee to participate in. The presenter of the panel collects any fees associated with supplies at the beginning of the panel.
NDK features some of the biggest anime-related competitions in the region. One of the biggest competitions of the weekend is the costume contest, where contestants display their own home-made anime and video game related costumes on our huge main events stage. The audience then votes for their favorite costumes, rewarding their favorite contestants with prize packages and goodies. Another huge competition is the Anime Music Video, or AMV competition. This is a contest where competitors synchronize their own musical selections with some of their favorite anime scenes to create their own music video. These videos are displayed on the two big screens in our main events hall where once again the audience votes for their favorites and prizes are awarded. The weekend also features a host of video gaming tournaments and competitions in our video gaming room.
A: Nan Desu Kan is the largest gathering in the Rocky Mountain Region of fans, industry guests, and vendors of Japanese animation, art, music, and video games. This is a full weekend event beginning mid-day on Friday and ending Sunday evening. NDK is one of the few large scale anime conventions in the nation that focuses on being family friendly.
